HISTORY
The Inner Sphere is the region of interstellar space
surrounding Earth to a radius of roughly 500 light
years. The five Successor States, each ruled by
an ancient Great House, are the Inner Sphere's dominant
power in the setting's "modern" era, although other
nations, empires, and independent worlds have ruled
parts of the Inner Sphere in the past, and continue
to exist. After the fall of the Star League, the
Inner Sphere fractured as each of the Great Houses
attempted to secure ruler ship during the Succession
Wars.
The Terran Hegemony was at the centre of it all,
ruling a rough sphere centred around Terra, and
clockwise around that, there was House Kurita's
Draconis Combine, House Davion's Federated Suns,
House Liao's Capellan Confederation, House Marik's
Free Worlds League, and House Steiner's Lyran Commonwealth.
These nations may have remained fairly stable, but
they were incessantly at each other's throats, seeking
every advantage they could find on the fields of
battle.The five of the great houses, excluding the
Terran Hegemony, almost immediately embarked upon
the greatest war in human history. Snatching up
the rulerless planets formerly of the Terran Hegemony,
and fighting each other for supremacy, the Inner
Sphere devolved into the First Succession War. The
fires of this war wreaked havoc on human civilization,
and lowered the technology level of the Inner Sphere
drastically with actions such as orbital bombardments,
nuclear weapons, the destruction of jumpships, factories,
and killing scientists.
